Social Media and the Modern-Day Witchfinder General

Social media can be a boon to many people…just for general chit-chat and for businesses, the quickest, least expensive way of getting their products seen by the World. Since there is a plethora of social medias out there which cater to the business owner, we are spoilt for choice. We have Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+, and Twitter to name a few. But, what you might not know is, with all the good this can bring to you in your business, it has a dark and despicable downside as well. It’s called “ghost banning” and I call it the modern-day Witchfinder General.

No, it has relatively nothing at all to do with real witches. Or, at least, it should not do, as that would clearly be bigotry. What it does have to do with is that any of the social medias we so happily flog our wares on to be seen by all and sundry can just as easily make us un-seen…or “ghosts”, if you will.

Take for example, Twitter. If you’re a seasoned Twitter business owner, you might do what is known as Twitter hours. If you don’t know, the Twitter hours are designed by certain business folk on Twitter to help business owners meet other business owners and retweet their products as well as follow each other. I’ve used these hours myself with great results but these days I’ve not bothered as I am one of the un-seen. I am ghost-banned.

Allow me to try to explain in simplest of terms that I can what happens during a Twitter hour when you are ghost-banned. Most people attending these hours will use a specific hashtag in order to stand out from other businesses tweeting at the same time. That hashtag, or hashtags, notifies other participants of that hour that you wish to have your business tweet retweeted. Not all participants, but most, will do a Twitter search on the hashtag being used to pull up all the tweets coming through during that hour with that specific hashtag. It just makes life a bit easier for us so we don’t have to try to catch them as they fly through in our normal mode of viewing tweets. Let’s say we are in #HandmadeCatToysHour (yes, it’s too long but it’s an example, after all). All businesses participating during this hour will hashtag their business tweets with #handmadecattoyshour. If they’re Twitter-savvy, they will do a Twitter search to pull up only the tweets which has that hashtag. Then, they can “see” all the participants whom are tweeting with that hashtag. Easy peasy!

But not so for those of us whom have been ghost-banned. We might as well be on the Moon for all the good it will do to be there, hashtag or not. No one will see our tweets in this setting. Yes, people on the “outside”…the ones looking at their normal tweet “browser” or “tweet deck” ..all the tweets which go by, if they follow you, they WILL physically see your tweets – but that will be whether you are employing a hashtag or not. If they so choose, they might wish to retweet you manually (click the mouse). But the folk congregated in a #HandmadeCatToysHour browser will NOT see you. They will, however, see you ONLY if you personally address them such as “@cattoysrus, have you seen my new Moggy Mat? What do you think? http://www.catmats.com #HandmadeCatToysHour” (yes, I am certain I went over 140 characters, I’m only a writer! I’m taking artistic licence!)

This is the bane of the ghost-banned. We can tweet, we can get new followers, we can follow others (unless blocked), we can be “seen” in normal tweet browsing by our followers, as well as to be “manually” (when somebody sees our tweet and retweets it from normal circumstances) retweeted but if we’re in a Twitter hour or if you retweet our hashtag from a 3rd party app such as Roundteam, we are non-existent. So, if you are business owner and find you aren’t being retweeted as much as you once were, you might want to have a follower perform this check for you. You can also sign out of your business account and sign into your personal account to perform this action.
1. Type from:twitternick into search. This is only showing the format of what you must type. You must replace “twitternick” with your own Twitter nick. For myself I would type from:SpeakingofWytch (from : SpeakingofWytch spreading it out a bit so you can see the colon in there).
2. You will be brought to the page that says “Top Tweets/All Tweets”. Are your tweets populated in this area? Or, as with me, do you hear crickets chirping? You will see a blank space saying “no results”.
3. You’ve been ghost-banned. This is why your tweets have dwindled to few or non-existent.
Do not try this from the account you are checking. It will show you as being there. You must check from a different account.

my Twitter account

For the business owner, this can be a huge loss of revenue as so many of us are using Twitter these days to get our products seen. Retweets are necessary for all the views and visits to our websites we can get…hopefully turning into sales.
When I first began noticing this on Boxing Day 2015, it was sporadic…sometimes I was retweeted as normal, then other times, not. I am fairly certain my visibility was off and on for around a week. After a friend on Twitter Googled @SpeakingofWytch, she found something about I had been “blocked” and Twitter and the 5th of January 2016. No more information than that! And there might have possibly been more info but if they used robot.txt then it could be why clicking the strange link appended to this ground-breaking news is not forth-coming with information.

So, you might have guessed. I am not best pleased. Obviously this has put not only a huge complication on being seen by the right buyers for my wares on Twitter but it has taken much of my precious little time to research this problem and to try to find answers. I would like to say Twitter is helpful but sadly, no. They have only two answers as to why you might no longer be searchable. One is, if you haven’t been actively using your Twitter account for a period of time. Or, they believe you are a spam account or just sending out spam. On Twitter’s Help website they have many “helps” for suspended accounts but you won’t find a sausage about when you are ghost-banned. It is a rather cowardly way (in my estimation) of telling you that they don’t like whatever it is you’ve done (or haven’t done) and they are putting you on the naughty step, yet at the same time allowing you to play. With your hands tied. Problem is, they don’t tell you why you’ve been naughty, nor do they tell you if and when they will deem you fit to play with others fully again. Meanwhile, sit here, take the crayons and colouring in book but wear these handcuffs. There’s a good lass.

I have made many attempts at getting Twitter’s help to no avail. A friend on Twitter gave me a link to a “form” to send in to the Help folk explaining my plight in 500 characters or less (this sort of gives me the first clue that they might not care). Once you’ve done this and click the submission button, you get a cheery “thank you for this. It will help us to help others but we probably won’t do f all for you and we probably won’t write to you about it, either”. No, this is not the exact wording but it is close enough and it might as well say it because it is what it means. This is my second clue that they *probably* don’t care.

Now I’m just getting sarky. And, when you need help, being sarcastic is not the way to go. But then, three “tickets” to Twitter and the occasional plea to @Support hasn’t helped, either. I really do wish they would give me the chance to defend myself and to put right my supposed wrongs. What if I were ghost-banned on accident? Probably not, still, why am I not allowed my day in “court”, but a killer is?

If anybody reading this can provide an easier way, I am open to all suggestions. I never thought being a witch in this day and age would be as it was 500+/- years ago. But, clearly, we still have a form of “Witchfinder General” in the shadows….and if you’re caught (whatever it is you’re doing wrong, but you shall never know) you won’t be drowned or burned, at least. But, you will be ghost-banned. Good luck and here is hoping it doesn’t happen to you!

1 May 2014 – Buy From Women Day!

Image

#buyfromwomen

It has been to my credit to recently join this lovely group of ladies on Etsy! I’ve joined loads of sales teams on Etsy over the course of my Etsy career, but very few hit the spot for me.  In fact, if I’m honest, I’ve seen only apathy from more than a few teams – not what one would expect from people whom you would *think* would want to sell, not sink.  Soo..when I was invited to join Buy From Women, I could only hope that this one may have a bit more kick…and yes, it DOES!

Everyone here helps each other! Team “games” are set up in such a way to not only encourage sharing other’s wares with the community, but also to share your own. And we are all encouraged not “blow our own horn” but to tweet, pin, share to Facebook, and make treasuries of each other’s wares. Helping ourselves through helping each other.  What is even more impressive is that the team leaders, Amy C. Lund (aclhandweaver), Laura (PLANETDIGS2), and Hannah Diamond (MissTeacherLady) will never fail to answer any questions and will not be condescending – as I have encountered in past from some teams.  It doesn’t matter what you sell, even this old crone with her witch-y wares, is welcome and treated with the utmost of care and respect.  The only qualification you need is to have a woman-owned business.  From thereon, you are given every opportunity and help an Etsy business – or ANY business, for that matter – could hope for.  Even those of us whom are seasoned online sellers learn invaluable tips and new ways of getting noticed with these lovely ladies!

So, this 1st of May, everyone who reads this, please re-tweet any tweets you see on Twitter with the hashtag #buyfromwomen and help all of  woman-owned business make it a success.  Not just for us, but for every woman-owned business all over the World. If you would like to learn more about Buy From Women, especially if you have a woman-owned business,  please feel free to visit these pages:

Do I Need A Wand?

SOWWAshSpiralGoddessWand

Do I Need A Wand?

The answer is NO!! You do not “need” a thing, apart from a strong desire to learn, a few good books, and a shed-load of intention. The tools of Witchcraft are important, but you do not need them, per se.

However, many young Witches (does not necessarily mean young in age, just young in the Craft) do feel a need to have certain tools to help them, at the very least in the beginning of their Path, to direct their intention more strongly…or as a bit of a “help” in their Magickal workings. I’m no longer a “young” witch, still, I will, nearly every time I work Magick, use my wand, altar paten, cauldron, Book of Shadows (Grimoire), and incense burner. I have an athame, but rarely ever use it. I don’t always use my wand, only when I am doing something very, very serious and want all the help I can get. I made my wand with a load of intention and it was, yes, a bit of hard work. You see, I’m a bit of a “luddite” when it comes to making items…I just can’t get the hang of power tools so the knife works well for me 🙂 Still, my wand works so well for me…because it is a part of me.

No, I didn’t use any body parts in the making of my wand, just my will and intention, some herbs in the tip and a powerful crystal. The same way I make bespoke wands for our customers. Of course, one would think that since I make their wand, all my intention will be in their wand and none of theirs. Not true. When I make a bespoke wand, if the customer asks for herbs in the tip, I will send the herbs and the crystal they order to go into the tip so that the Witch his or herself can enchant the herbs they choose, enchant their crystal and put their intention into their own wand. And of course, one almost always cleanses, consecrates, and empowers their tools before using as I would expect many would do with one of our wands. Your wand will well and truly be your own.

Of course, we also make pre-made wands as well, again, the Witch who buys the pre-made wand can certainly put his or her intention into it after cleansing, consecrating, and empowering. Many Witches (including myself when I was young) buy pre-made wands all the time and have great success with them, love them and wouldn’t use anything else. That tells me that they must work 🙂

So, no, you don’t need our wands, or any wand for that matter. Although, if you feel you do, please see what we can do for you as you will no doubt look at many websites for pricing, etc. and keep Speaking of Witch Wands & Magickal Things in mind.

Visit our main site at http://speakingofwitchwandsandmagickalthings.com or our Etsy shop at https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/SpeakingofWitchWands to see what we have on offer! And we do add new items almost every week so please bookmark our pages! Thank you and blessed be! )O(

Enchantment Beads© ~ How and Why Do I Use Them?

SOWWFireDetail

Many of you who follow this blog, like us on Facebook, go to our Etsy shop, or follow us on Twitter, have seen our many “adverts” for Enchantment Beads©.  And, whilst you may think, “ah, they are pretty”, many don’t know why we developed the idea into a working tool or why or how to use them.  Fair enough, I wouldn’t have any idea, either, had I not created the idea 🙂  So, here we go ~

I created our Enchantment Beads© because of my own sort of inability to “keep up” with the number of times I “enchanted” a herb for a magickal work, or even new crystals that I wanted to work with.  The phone may ring, or the cat may plop into my lap and begin begging, or I may get some random thought in my head that just threw my intention and concentration out the window!   I knew I had to come up with a better plan or I may only enchant a herb 8 times instead of 9 or just plainly forget (especially if the phone had rung and I had to take the call).

They look a lot like Prayer beads, yes.  But they aren’t.  There are 9 large beads on every set, sometimes with little silver spacers in-between and sometimes with smaller beads used as spacers.  The idea is to hold them in your free hand, touching each bead as you repeat your enchantment.  Some people feel 3x’s is a charm, others (like myself) like the perfect number 9 of the Goddess.  How many times is unimportant, apart to the individual Witch.  Keeping up with how many times is, especially with our busy lives.

So, there is the basic gist of why and how!  Easy peasy!  And to make them more individualised for everyone who purchases the Enchantment Beads©, we make them in the representation of the Elements, Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit/Love.  On most of our sets we use only quality gemstone beads.  We do have a few less expensive sets in which we have used either plastic, coloured glass, or wooden beads…they are beautiful, I just prefer (and feel that most Witches will as well) real gemstone beads.  On the Earth set, you will find a small Pentagram charm, on the Air, you will find a pair of feathers, on the Fire, a lovely brass dragon charm, on the Water, a little silver or bronze starfish, and for Spirit/Love, a heart.  All bead sets have a silver lanyard clip with which you may clip to your belt or just use for hanging when not in use.  No matter how often or little you use them, they will look lovely hanging by your altar!

We’ve just made a new batch of sets in Sodalite (Air), Blue Howlite (Air), Rose Quartz (Water), Malachite (Fire), Aquamarine glass (water), Lapis Lazuli (Air), Tiger’s Eye (Earth) and we have all representations available so please visit our Etsy shop at https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/SpeakingofWitchWands to order!  With Yule and Christmas coming, please don’t wait!  And, we can also make a representation just for you, which you can access on our Etsy page.  Also, please give us a like on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/SpeakingofWitchWands and follow us on Twitter @SpeakingofWytch!  Thank you and Blessed be!

The Magickal Oak Tree

The Magick of Oak…

Gender:  Masculine; Planet:  Sun; Element:  Fire

Sacred to Dagna, Dianus, Jupiter, Thor, Zeus, Herne, Janus, Rhea, Cybele, Hecate, Pan, and Erato

Oak was a source of food for early settlers in Britain and revered by the Druids.  The Druids (traditionally) would not meet for rituals unless an Oak tree was present.  Religious articles were often fashioned from the tree and Witches danced beneath it.  A tree as long-lived as the Oak naturally offers magickal protection and if you have two twigs of Oak, bound by a red thread in an equal-armed cross, it would be well for you to hang it in your home.

Acorns, of course, have always been used for nature’s help – guarding against lightning strikes, drawing to the bearer wealth, among other things.  But, have you ever considered the magickal power of the Oak bark and chips?

Logs of Oak were often burned in fireplaces to draw off illness.  Nowadays, not everyone has a fireplace, however, Oak still has a healing property in the bark and chips!  They can be ground fine and used in incense, with the same effect.  Also, in incense to draw money and wealth, protection, luck, fertility, and potency.

Carrying a small pouch of Oak bark and chips in a wallet or handbag draws wealth and adds protection to the bearer.  It can also be used in poppets to effect the properties that you desire for yourself or another.

We sell 50g resealable packets of Oak bark and wood chips on our Etsy Shop (which you may also access on our Facebook page). at http://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/SpeakingofWitchWands along with other magickal things.   If you choose to shop our Etsy shop from Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/SpeakingOfWitchWands you will automatically receive 20% off your purchase of any items in our shop!   Please stop by and have a look – and don’t be dismayed by the small number of items as we are adding new bits and bobs daily.  Thank you for your support and many blessings!

The Magickal Cypress Tree

CypressTree

Many of you may or may not be aware of the magickal properties of many trees.  For instance, did you know that the Cypress tree has a “folk name” of “The Tree of Death”?  It is thought to be so because at one time in Egypt, coffins were made of Cypress wood.  However, funnily enough, one of the magickal properties of Cypress wood is longevity!  If one carries it on their person, in a pocket or worn as jewelry, it is said to give long life and protection.  Cypress is also comforting in times of sorrow,  such as the death of a friend or loved one as it eases the mind and allays grief if carried to the funeral.  Many deities hold sacred the Cypress such as MithrasAphrodite, Hekat, CupidApollo and others.

We sell 25g resealable packets of Cypress wood chips on our Etsy Shop (which you may also access on our Facebook page) at http://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/SpeakingofWitchWands along with other magickal things.  Please stop by and have a look – and don’t be dismayed by the small number of items as we are adding new bits and bobs daily.  Thank you for your support and many blessings!
